Day 2

The Floi Bird Reserve

Today we start the day with a lecture by the Icelandic bird specialist, Jóhann Óli Hilmarsson, who has great knowledge on Icelandic birds. After that he will guide us to the bird sanctuary area by Eyrarbakki village where wildfowl, waders and some other wetland birds are to be seen: Red-throated Diver, Wigeon, Tufted Duck, Red-breasted Merganser, Oystercatcher, Dunlin, Black-tailed Godwit, Red-necked Phalarope, Meadow Pipit and more. If time and tide are favourable, some shore watch can be included. When all birdwatchers are satisfied, we will get a superb lobster feast at Fjöruborðið, a restaurant by the sea in Stokkseyri.

Day 3

Þingvellir - Snæfellsnes

For this day we have planned to visit the National Park of Thingvellir and the biggest lake in Iceland, Thingvallavatn. In Thingvellir we will see many species of ducks, like Barrow’s Goldeney and hopefully some Harlequin ducks, there is also a good possibility for the Great Northern Diver. We’ll spend the next 2 nights in the village Stykkishólmur which is a lovely small town on the north side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula.

Day 4

Snæfellsnes

In the morning we set for a trip around the peninsula, looking for birds and seals along the coast of Snæfellsnes there we hope to find the rare Northern Shoveler, Horned Grebe and more wetland- and shorebirds. In the afternoon we’ll go on a boat trip from Stykkishólmur, where we’ll see nesting Shags, Kittiwakes and “the king of birds”, the White-tailed eagle. During the trip the staff on the boat will set out a scraper and give us a taste of fresh delicacy from the sea for example Sea Urchin (Uni) and Scallops.

Day 5

Látrabjarg

We start the day going out to sea again and now we sail across the Breiðafjörður to reach Latrabjarg bird cliff, the westernmost point of Iceland and of Europe.  It is a spectacular sight and is up to 400m high and full of nesting seabirds, with Puffins on the edge.On skerries beneath the cliffs, we can see Grey Seals resting and swimming around. After spending a few hours enjoying the spectacular nature we head back to our hotel for the night. Flokalundur is a nice little hotel and after dinner there is a possibility to go to their natural hot pot down by the beach and relax and enjoy the nature. The nature in this area is absolutely breathtaking because of beautiful mountains and wildlife.  White-tailed Eagle, Ptarmigan, Gyrfalcon, Wren and Redpoll are among the breeding species in the area.

Day 6

Flókalundur-Bjarkalundur

Today we drive back along the coast in the direction of Reykhólar and we will most likely be stopping a lot to watch the amazing birdlife on the way.  Great Northern Diver, Red-throated diver and White-tailed Eagle are not a rare sight in this area. We’ll reach our hotel Bjarkalundur for dinner and overnight. In the evening, we can take a walk around and look for Owls (Short-eared Owl) that hunt around there in the evening.
